At FOZ, we follow a constructivist approach, where deep learning grows from curiosity, not pressure. Our programmes are grounded in the Portuguese national curriculum, while remaining individualised, inquiry-driven, and carefully adapted to each child’s pace and way of thinking. All stages are delivered in a fully bilingual environment, in Portuguese and English.
The earliest years at FOZ are shaped by the Reggio Emilia and Waldorf traditions — approaches that trust the child as a capable, curious being, full of their own theories about the world.
Learning here is real. Children learn through living. Through kneading clay and building with wood, through watching a beetle cross a leaf and asking why, through painting what they feel before they have words for it. These are how young children develop language, mathematical thinking, scientific observation, and emotional depth — all at once, and at their own pace.
The natural world is central to everything. The garden, the seasons, the living things children encounter each day are not backdrop — they are curriculum.
Our mixed-age Kindy group, ages 3 to 6, is a small community where each child is seen and known.

Primary years at FOZ are where curiosity grows into knowledge. Children engage fully with the Portuguese national curriculum but always through inquiry, always through doing. Rather than covering topics in isolation, learning is woven into extended projects that invite children to investigate real questions, make real decisions, and arrive at real understanding.
Because every child learns differently, teaching at FOZ is genuinely individualised. Teachers observe closely, adapt constantly, and trust each child to find their own way to mastery — at a pace and through a path that belongs to them. Academic excellence is something children discover for themselves, not something imposed from the outside.
Mixed-age classes means children are always learning in community, not just in parallel. English runs as a full language of instruction alongside Portuguese. Music, Visual Arts, and Physical Education are integrated into every week and connect naturally to the broader themes children are exploring.

By Years 5–6, students have spent years learning how to learn. Lower Secondary at FOZ is where that foundation becomes very clear. Students take on more independent research, develop their own lines of enquiry, and produce work that reflects genuine intellectual engagement — not simple task completion.
The Portuguese national curriculum is delivered fully and with increasing depth, in both Portuguese and English. Students arrive each day with growing confidence, strong bilingual fluency, and the thinking habits needed to thrive in Year 7 and beyond.
Learning remains deeply individualised. Teachers know each student well and continue to adapt to how they think, work, and grow best.
